Cockwells’ unprecedented boat show success secures more opportunities for skilled craftsmen

Mylor-based Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding has returned triumphant from the Southampton Boat Show and Monaco Yacht Show with a record-breaking raft of orders for its beautiful bespoke boats.

With a global reputation for combining exquisite craftsmanship with technological ingenuity – as evidenced by the company having recently scooped the Tender & Support Vessel Design category of the prestigious ShowBoats Design Awards – Cockwells’ custom builds are highly prized by discerning individuals. One such client snapped up a super-sleek superyacht tender almost as soon as the company had opened its Monaco stand for business, wowed by the quality of the stylish 9.5m open day boat that formed part of its exhibit.

Closer to home at Southampton, the Cornish company unveiled a new model in its popular Duchy Motor Launch series – the Duchy 35 – for which sales were secured alongside several for the flagship of the series, the Duchy 27.

Built in low maintenance composites, Duchy Motor Launches are classically-designed, handcrafted, semi-production vessels that can be customised to the client’s exact specifications with a seemingly infinite number of optional extras: from teak decks and hand-carved oak tables to a cockpit sun-bed and customised china in tailor-made stowage.
The Duchy 35 has been created specifically for cruising and relaxing in style. With a spacious cockpit and expansive saloon to provide ample space for up to ten day guests or a luxurious weekend berth for two, the design also offers additional flexibility in that either a single or twin cabin layout can be selected.

The Duchy 27 is a classic day boat for six or a cosy weekender for either two or four. Classically-styled with graceful lines, it offers exceptional performance with more than a sprinkling of creature comforts.

“We are overjoyed at the response we received at both the Southampton Boat Show and Monaco Yacht Show,” comments Founder & Managing Director, Dave Cockwell. “Most companies would be thrilled to sell one boat – let alone six with three on the first day. This is testament to the excellent work of our design team in responding to the needs and requirements of our clientele and our highly skilled craftsmen who bring those designs to life in meticulous detail. Here at Cockwells, I like to think that we are a family, all working to the same aim – to build beautiful bespoke boats that we hope will become the classics of the future. The take-home quote from Southampton was that the Duchy 35 was ‘Best Boat in Show’ as we heard it so many times from passers-by. The luxury day boat we exhibited at Monaco was the most photographed superyacht tender at the show as she was the only vessel to incorporate bespoke carpentry. Her craftsmanship was noted on many occasions and led to the sale of a superyacht tender and a contract being signed on the stand. With a full order book to take us well into 2019 and beyond, I would like to hear from any skilled boatbuilders, designers, laminators and finishers who would relish the chance to join our team and help us fulfil this unprecedented demand for the tailor-made, high calibre craft that we create.”
