Sail and Motor Yachts

The Design and Build Process

With you every step of the way…

At Cockwells, we appreciate that commissioning a sail or motor yacht is a momentous decision. We want to make your experience of working with our designers and naval architects to bring your custom-build to fruition as memorable as possible – from the design of the hull and the powering of the boat to the layout of the interior, the selection of upholstery fabric and the brand of coffee machine for the galley.

1. Consultation

Our design team – consisting of a stylist, an interior designer, a naval architect, a structural engineer, a mechanical electrical engineer, an outfitting engineer and a Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) consultant – work together to draft an initial proposal. This is then developed and adapted until we have achieved the precise look and feel within the specified requirements and you are ready to move forward.

2. Planning

Once we have agreed a style and basic specification for the project, we draw up a contract and plan the build in our schedule. Depending on the size of your yacht and the materials that are required, the build time will be between six months and two years.

3. The Build

Following your approval to proceed, we will provide you with monthly photographic updates to document progress. Fixed price contracts are billed in stage payments and any other contracts are billed monthly. If you would prefer to view progress in person, you are more than welcome to visit the yard.

4. Sea Trial and Delivery

Upon completion, your yacht will be thoroughly sea-trialled to ensure that the vessel is Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) compliant and that you are entirely satisfied before final handover. We are happy to offer on board training to help you familiarise yourself with your new craft.

5. Service and Maintenance

Upon request, we can to offer service and maintenance packages to ensure that your yacht remains in sparkling condition for many years to come.
