Irens is perhaps best known as the designer of the 75ft trimaran, B&Q, built specifically for Ellen MacArthur’s successful world record solo circumnavigation in 2005. His design portfolio includes many record-breaking multihulls which were legendary on the race circuit throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Irens notably associates his childhood obsession with ‘slippery hulls’ with his continued success as one of the world’s celebrated contemporary yacht designers and his latest creation is no exception.

Averaging at just under 11 knots and demonstrating reduced noise and vibration at speed, Wilhelmina’s small engine size substantially reduces fuel consumption, achieving just 0.4 litres per nautical mile.

She is the second in a series of test vessels built to expand knowledge and experience of ‘low displacement / length’ hull forms. Design objectives included optimising the speed / range of a motor launch based on the use of a semi displacement hull.

Wilhelmina has proved to be an ideal vehicle for ferrying friends and family to beaches and quiet anchorages. The cockpit offers plenty of room for everyone while the twin berths in her cabin provide a well-ventilated and comfortable space for occasional nights aboard. There is also a butane-powered cabin stove to make sure out-of-season days afloat are also a pleasure.

Right forward in Wilhelmina’s fo’c’s’le is an electrically-operated WC. When not in use, the WC is covered by a folding box. Apart from hiding the WC, this also forms the sole of a large forward cockpit which offers a roost for children when the boat is under way and also allows the anchor to be handled with ease as the perimeter of the cockpit offers support at the right height.

With 180 engine hours logged, Wilhelmina’s time as a test vessel will soon be coming to an end, and we are on the lookout for someone who would like to enjoy the unique attributes she has to offer.
