Henry Ward
November 13, 2019 International Boat Industry: UK SY tender manufacturer to present at Cornwall Marine Conference

Cockwells is one of three companies speaking at this year’s event

Henry Ward, the design director of Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding in the UK, a leading bespoke superyacht tender builder based in Mylor, will make one of three presentations at the annual Cornwall Marine Conference. The event is being held on November 14 at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

Ward will share his presentation with Pete Cullum, the founder of Cullum Bespoke, a design company which has worked closely with Aston Martin over recent years. Cullum has now switched to the marine leisure sector by becoming the principal creative designer at Princess Yachts, a position he has held since February.

Cockwells and Cullum worked together on the build of the 10.5m superyacht tender Titian, which won the 2018 Concour d’Élégance at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Ward explained to IBI that his part of the presentation would comprise an overview of Cockwells, while Cullum will highlight the growing links between the car and marine sectors.

Cockwells has seen a period of success and expansion over the past year or so, which has caused its workforce to rise from around 40 people to over 70. The company, which has invested in a major upgrade of its Mylor facility recently, won a series of orders from Spain and Italy for its Duchy design of motor launches which were shown at the Southampton Boat Show.

As part of the crossover theme of the Cornwall Marine Conference, the other presentations will look at what other sectors are doing to innovate and grow, and how the marine sector can learn from this. Also, what new technology should we be embracing, and how new techniques can be applied to improve client experience, business efficiency and product development.

One of the other speakers is Adam Huckstep, founder and managing director of Hypermotive Ltd, a company that provides electrical and electronics integration engineering and low-medium volume manufacturing into the growing zero-emissions automotive, motorsport and niche vehicle sectors. Although predominantly focused on automotive and motorsport, Hypermotive is increasingly bringing its electrification services to the rail, aerospace, off-highway and marine sectors.

In a new departure this year, the conference will also hold a special workshop on Virtual Reality and highlight how companies might make use of it to improve operational practices.
